Lighting Tips for the Living Room

By Lights&Co. Team
on December 17, 2015

Modern Living Room Singapore

The living room is considered one of the most important areas in the house for the reason that this is the place where family and friends bond together. Apart from the right theme, decor and furniture for the living room, lighting plays a very significant role in interior design. When the living room is properly lit, it helps to accentuate ambience and can provide calm and relaxation.

Selecting the right lights depends on your needs and requirements and it is essential to consider all aspects as it can be expensive and cumbersome to redo everything from scratch.

If you have a good size living room, consider placing a chandelier or multiple pendant lights in the centre as a decorative piece. Additional lighting in the form of cove lighting, downlights or track lights can be used when engaging in activities like reading or games.

Cleaning and caring for your Faucets and Rain Showers

By Lights&Co. Team
on November 15, 2015

Everyone wants to maintain that shiny and polished appearance on their faucets and rain showers. Chrome finishing is often used in these bath fixtures as it complements most fixtures with its clean and polished look.

Cleaning your Faucet

Tap water, concentrated or harsh cleaning products contain chemicals that leave behind water marks and can lead to tarnishing. Using a mild cleaning product with a soft scrub or cloth goes a long way.

Method 1: Fill a small container with water and add a few squirts of cleaning liquid. Wet a cloth in the soapy water and wipe down your fixtures.

Method 2: Combine equal parts of vinegar and water. Wet the cloth in the solution and wipe down your fixtures. For stubborn spots, leave the cloth over it for a couple of minutes to loosen the stain.

After cleaning, dry the fixtures with a clean cloth and there you have it, clean and polished fixtures looking just like new!

LED Lighting or Incandescent Lighting

By Lights&Co. Team
on October 04, 2015

LED lighting has became the preferred choice for most home and commercial space owners as prices have declined in tandem with the rapid progress in technology. An LED light bulb, although still more costly than an incandescent bulb, is still affordable as you would be able to get it for as low as $5. The advantages of LED bulb far outweigh its costs due to its inherent low energy consumption and long lifespan. These attributes have almost forced incandescents out the entire market save for decorative Edison bulbs, which serve a niche market for industrial / vintage feel.

So how does LED compare to incandescent in terms of brightness and energy savings? There isn't a uniform way to do this but generally when LED and incandescent are the same in brightness, a LED bulb draws 5 times lesser wattage than an incandescent. For example if a 40W incandescent is able to project 450 lumens in brightness, the equivalent in LED only requires 6W to 9W.

Another distinct advantage of LED is its ability to project different light colours. The light emitted from a LED has a specific wavelength hence a specific colour. Let's just focus on the 3 popular light colours for homes and commercial spaces - cool white, daylight and warm white. These colours are measured in temperature, the unit being kelvin. Incandescent bulbs can only emit warm white colour. While on this topic, the actual temperature of LED is also much cooler than an incandescent as the heat dissipates through a heat sink in the base of the bulb.

So is there any advantage of an incandescent? Incandescents are dimmable and are compatible with most dimmer switches. There are dimmable LEDs in the market but you need to ensure that the dimmer switch / circuitry is compatible and be prepared to shell out more money for them.

Today, LED is so prevalent, functional and cost-effective. Understand your requirements and light up your space with the appropriate LED lighting (ie: downlights, light bulbs, track lights or cob lights).  CT Food Chain

Home Decor: Bedroom Lighting

Home Decor: Bedroom Lighting

Most people in Singapore give little thought to bedroom lighting, they simply install one ceiling light and that's it! But the bedroom isn't just a space for sleeping, it is where you spend time with your loved ones, relax and watch a little tv or do some reading before retiring for the night. Having adequate and the right lighting set the mood and ensure your eyes don't get strained.

Modern Touch:.

Get recessed flat panel downlights to achieve a flushed ceiling and add on cove lighting for a warm ambience. This is especially suitable for smaller bedrooms as it makes the bedroom look bigger and not too cluttered. Position some downlights along your bed head if you intend to do some reading at night.

Bedroom Lighting with Recessed Downlights

Industrial Touch:.

If you are those who seek to up the ante with something different, go for the industrial look in your bedroom. Install track or cob lights across your room and angle each light in a different direction to illuminate the whole space.

Industrial pendant lights are designed in such a way that they do not enclose the light source but yet may not provide sufficient illumination. Hang a few pendant lights to showcase the industrial look and add on wall lamps by the bedsides for light reading or work.

Bedroom Lighting with Track Lights

Scandinavian Touch:.

Generally, scandinavian bedrooms are in white pastel colour and require simple lightings to complete the room. Tasteful glass pendant lights or white lamps can easily do the trick. Modern designer lightings with a hint of black can also add a nice contrast to your space. Remember not to get too fussed up over it and overcomplicate the entire decor.

Choosing the Perfect Lighting for your Home

By Lights&Co. Team
on August 09, 2015

Lightings would typically be the second thing that comes to mind after getting your home and settling all the renovation stuff. Lights set the ambience, aesthetics and help you to perform tasks. Hanging lights, ceiling lights, recessed lights, track lights, what do you choose?

1.: Determine the theme and end result you want to achieve.

You should have a clear idea of the mood you want to set in every space of your home. For example if you want to showcase a modern living room with ample light, get a lighting fixture that fits the size and look. Explore having multiple light sources like recessed lightings if you have a high ceiling, this would also help you to perform a variety of activities and functions better.

2.: Use multiple light fixtures or focussed lightings for functionality and activity

Do not be afraid of using a few of the same light fixtures to better illuminate your space. It would be odder if you use different light fixtures together. Say if you do spend a lot of time in your kitchen, consider multiple light sources or focused lightings. In the past, many homes simply affix a ceiling light in the centre of the kitchen deeming it sufficient. However when you turn your back to work at the kitchen counter, the light gets blocked and the poor lighting can affect your eyesight and activity. Take a look at how the couple of kitchens stand out with their choice of lightings.

3.: Provide night lighting along walkways

This is essential if you have young kids or elderly people living with you. Consider using dim night lights or fixtures attached to dimmer switches. It will help children and senior folks to navigate around the house especially when visiting the washroom or getting some water from the kitchen. Leaving a dim night light on in your children's room give them a sense of security and comfort as well.

4.: Use recessed lightings for high ceilings and modern decor.

Downlights are used to create a "flushed" look when fixed into the ceiling. With 3 different light colours to choose from, they set the mood in your space. You can also opt for dimmer switches to be attached or get those that can change different light colours with the touch of a remote control. These fixtures are affordable, subtle, modern and never seem to go out of style.

5.: Research your lights carefully

Lastly, do research your lights and the light up area carefully. This is especially important if you plan to use a chandelier for your dining or living area. Consider the height of the ceiling and the space the chandelier might take up. A chandelier could look oversized and inappropriate in a small space or it might not fit into the overall decor of your home. Minimalist lightings can be easily fit in most decors and reduces the possibility of getting it wrong.
